Grave Ground: St. Mark’s Church-in-the-Bowerie
Holga Photographs 1999-2001
St. Mark’s Church-in-the-Bowerie is situated in lower Manhattan on Stuyvesant Street, where East 10th diagonally meets East 9th. Geographically, by the compass, it is one of truest East-West cross streets in the borough.
The church stands on hallowed ground. It has always been a place of worship, since Peter Stuyvesant, the truculent first Governor of New York, built a chapel there in 1660. The present church has stood through much of New York City history. Stuyvesant‘s family’s remains are interred in the east end of the church, while the yard outside contains vaults with the remains of early Dutch and English families, largely forgotten now.
